Just finished reading John Maxwell’s book The 360° Leader. It is a book about leading in every direction from within an organization. As many of you know, Johnny Mack (as we like to call him) is the guru of all things remotely associated with leadership. He’s written tons of great books on the subject and though I’ve appreciated eveything I’ve ever read by him, I must honestly say, this one was the best by far.

Here’s why: Very few people currently lead, or will ever lead from the top of a large organization. I certainly am not the head of anything larger than my wonderful family right now. So, the question always hit me, how do I lead my peers and those above me most effectively. Johnny breaks it down for us rather well and I will give you a little sneak peak of a few of the principles that really hit me here:

Lead Up Principles:

  • #2 LIghten your leader’s load.
  • #6 Be prepared every time you take your leader’s time.
Lead Across Principles:
  • #2 Put completing fellow leaders ahead of competing with them.
  • #5 Expand your circle of acquaintances.
  • #7 Don’t pretend you’re perfect. (can I get an Amen?!?)
Lead Down Principles:
  • #1 Walk slowly through the halls.
  • #5 Model the behavior you desire.

Now, I’ve read this book before, but honestly, this time it rocked my world. Probably because I am in a better place in my life to receive all that great insight. If you are a leader, or want to be one, or know someone who is one, or have a job, or want a job someday, or even if you simply breath oxygen, this book is for you.

Great job Johnny Mack! You are getting added to the books page. What an honor for the guru.

Well put Fisher, I agree it is an honor for Johnny Mac to make it on to the Donny Fisher book list.

  2. Love Maxwell! Good review.

  3. That was a good review. Thanks for sharing some of the most helpful points. I was given the book a few years back, and still haven’t read it so it was nice to hear some of the high points here. :)
